A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said Robins Rd was closed by emergency services after they were alerted at 2.43pm.
About 100 metres of Robins Rd, adjacent to Queenstown Primary School's playing fields, was cordoned off for a time.
Pupils were allowed to leave as usual.
The spokesman said the source of the leak had been located and the gas company contacted.
