Despite a thaw in temperatures there were three crashes reported in the Wakatipu on Sunday.
Sergeant Kate Pirovano, of Queenstown, said an abandoned car was found on its roof by a roading contractor about 1.45am, blocking the southbound lane of State Highway 6 near the Devils Staircase.
The Southland-registered car, which was allegedly stolen, had apparently rolled after hitting the rock-face.
Alcohol was suspected to be a cause of the crash, as there were many alcohol bottles at the scene.
Sgt Pirovano said it was ``very irresponsible'' for the driver to leave the vehicle blocking a lane in the middle of the night.
About 5am, a utility vehicle slid on ice and left the road on a straight section of Malaghans Rd. No injuries were reported.
As reported in the Otago Daily Times yesterday, a vehicle hit a woman as she crossed Robins Rd in central Queenstown about 8.50am. She was taken to Lakes District Hospital with bruising and a cut to the head.
Fifteen French visitors were evicted from a backpackers hostel in the resort just after midnight on Sunday. Two were arrested on drugs charges and one was given a formal warning.
The group caused a disturbance while having a party at the hostel and smoking cannabis, Sgt Pirovano said.
