Sewage sludge going to Winton

Winton has become the end of the line for the Queenstown Lakes district's sewage sludge.

Once trucked to the Victoria Flats landfill in the Gibbston Valley near Queenstown, the substance was now going to the Southern Regional Landfill facility operated by AB Lime just outside Winton, in Southland.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council disclosed the new destination in a press release last Thursday when it announced it would not proceed with a sludge-drying plant at Luggate.

The change of landfill occurred in October 2016, but appears not to have been publicised widely.

The council's chief engineer Ulrich Glasner told the Otago Daily Times in a statement this week 22 tonnes of Wanaka sludge and 50 tonnes of Queenstown sludge was trucked to Winton in an average week.

Chairman of the Gibbston Valley Residents Association Miles Lind, said he was aware of the change of destination for the sludge. However, valley dwellers still wanted a gas capture system installed at Victoria Flats to reduce odours, which have upset nearby residents in the past.

According to the council's 2018 draft waste management and minimisation plan consultation document, the Victoria Flats landfill is still used for the disposal of ''general waste'' from Queenstown, Wanaka, Alexandra and Cromwell, ''special waste'', kerbside collections and glass from the Wakatipu recycling centre.
