Brendan Lindsay drove from Christchurch to Queenstown on Tuesday night, just to ensure he claimed a "First on the Chair" T-shirt from Coronet Peak on Wednesday morning.

His efforts also earned him a special place in NZSki's history books, becoming the first person to complete the first on the chair trifecta, having already been first up Mt Hutt, on June 7, The Remarkables on June 8 and then finishing at Coronet.

Mr Lindsay arrived in Queenstown about 10.15pm on Tuesday and spent the night on the mountain, next to the new, high-speed, $20million chairlift, to secure the first spot in the line.

"I couldn't even sit on a chair - with the new chairlift they're all down in a cave thingy," he said.

"So I stood, waited, watched a couple of TV shows on my phone - it was about -6[degC] when I drove through from Christchurch.

"It's probably not something I'm looking to do again in a hurry - it wasn't the most comfortable thing to do - but was more of a personal challenge."

Mr Lindsay was given a 3 Peak Pass by NZSki for next season to recognise his own three peak feat.

Coronet, which officially opened for business last Saturday, delayed the annual event until there was sufficient snow for skiing and boarding.

Despite a lack of natural snow, cold temperatures had enabled snow-making to move into high gear to get some of the trails and the new chairlift(which can take 2600 passengers an hour) open.

Ski area manager Nigel Kerr said so far the company was impressed by the new Coronet Express.

"The addition of automated underground chairs and gondola parking is going to streamline start-ups and eliminate the stoppages we had on the old Coronet Peak Express when the line and grips got icy.

"It's also so much better and easier for our maintenance team to operate."

Treble Cone is the only Southern Lakes skifield left to open. That is scheduled to occur next Thursday, June 27.
