Hundreds of people swarmed to the Village Green in Queenstown to celebrate St Patrick's Day on Saturday.

Despite the lively crowd of about 350 people, police said they did not have any trouble with the impromptu social gathering.

Rubbish bins around the Green were overflowing on Sunday with empty boxes, cans and alcohol bottles.

People left when the resort's booze ban came into effect at 10pm.

The Village Green notoriously hosted a messy, impromptu party to celebrate the annual "Crate Day" in 2016.

Last year the Queenstown Lakes District Council enforced a temporary alcohol ban to coincide with the event.
