Mr Gabler said it was the first day of a week of lessons at the new facility, which will be officially launched next year.
The lessons are being held in collaboration with the Canterbury-based Roddy Wood School of Polo, which is providing ponies and coaching.
People taking part in the lessons will have an opportunity to watch the school's instructors play a friendly game tomorrow evening.
