Tributes for man who died

Tributes to an Irishman who reportedly died in a fall from a balcony in Queenstown have appeared in Irish newspapers.

The Sunday World and The Irish Sun reported on Monday that Dillon McDermott, originally of Moycullen in Galway, had died in an accident in the resort town last week.

Police were called to a Kent St property in Queenstown Hill about 7.30am last Wednesday.

A media statement said a man’s "sudden death" at the property was not believed to be suspicious.

The New Zealand Herald has reported the death as being caused by a fall from a balcony.

A police spokeswoman said yesterday the death had been referred to the coroner, but was unable to confirm the information reported by the media outlets.

The Sunday World said Mr McDermott was being remembered as kind, positive and loved.

A tribute from one person said he had only met Mr McDermott a few times in Galway during college, but he had been "always a positive, uplifting and considerate person".

"He brought a lot of friendship and warmth to people I care about, which is a strong testimony to the light he had."

Another mourner said it was a "huge loss to everyone who knew and loved him".

The newspaper reported Mr McDermott’s death notice as stating he would be "deeply missed by his loving family", including his parents, Tom and Patricia, and his fiancee Elle Burton.

The Irish Sun newspaper said tributes had been "pouring in" since Mr McDermott’s death was confirmed.
