Riversdale policeman Jacob Schriek (55), a former Commonwealth Games cyclist, collapsed and died on Saturday from a heart attack while taking part in the Motatapu Icebreaker mountain bike event between Glendhu Bay and Arrowtown.

The married father-of-three has been described by colleagues in police and emergency services as a "good guy" and "part of the furniture" in the small Southland community where he had worked for more than 20 years.

Senior Constable Schriek had also been a volunteer worker at the 2009 Michael Hill New Zealand Open golf tournament last week.

A former New Zealand track cyclist, he competed at the 1974 Commonwealth Games, where he came sixth in the 1km time trial, and at the World Games.

He competed in police and fire games and other sporting events, and was a well-known golfer in Otago and Southland.

Snr Const Schriek was riding the 50km Motatapu race on Saturday while his wife, Debbie, ran the 42km marathon.

The couple have three adult children - Rebekah, Matt and Chris.

Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes, of Invercargill, told the Otago Daily Times he had known Snr Const Schriek for about 30 years.

"He was part of the furniture - well known, respected, a quintessential family guy," he said.

He and other Southland police were shocked by their colleague's death.

"He was widely respected by the community and police.

''He was just a neat fellow - he was the best."

St John ambulance service regional operations manager Peter Graylands yesterday described Snr Const Schriek as a "good guy" who would be greatly missed.

The Hills tournament secretary Sue McFarlane said Snr Const Schriek had co-ordinated a volunteer team from the Riversdale Golf Club to help out during the 2009 Michael Hill New Zealand Open.

He had performed volunteer duties on Thursday and Friday before taking Saturday off for the Motatapu event.

The rest of his team were back on the golf course yesterday, completing their duties, she said.

"From what I can gather, they decided they needed to come and it was what he would have wanted," Ms McFarlane said.

Motatapu race organiser Tom Pryde, of Queenstown, said yesterday medical assistance was quickly on hand but despite all efforts, Mr Schriek died at the scene.

Mr Pryde extended his sincere sympathies to Mr Schriek's family.

His death was the first in the event's five-year history, Mr Pryde said.
