Oliver! will in the limelight in Fairlie this month.

The show would mark the first time the Mackenzie Community Theatre had all of its newly purchased lights in action.

The theatre group received a grant from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury late last year for $20,000 to upgrade the lighting equipment.

Publicity manager Sue Wilkins said the show had "sticky" tunes, with some the equivalent of an ear worm, for everyone.

She said the script was well written and had "slightly darker stuff".

Ms Wilkins said the production had been helped along by a highly skilled community, which had also helped with tasks such as set building, costumes and scene tech design.

"They really pulled out the stops."

She said sourcing costumes for a Victorian setting meant glorious frocks would be starkly contrasted with the rugged urchin look.

Ms Wilkins said the cast’s ages ranged from primary school children to grandparents.

She said they were working with a team across a whole range of ages to achieve a shared goal.

The younger cast members were working hard, singing, dancing and learning all the words for the music.

The two youngsters playing Oliver and Dodger have "totally nailed" the characters, she said.

"Those two wee lads are just going to be stars."

With a strong, experienced director and creative team she said it was a "high-quality production".

"Just a fun night."

Tickets to the show are expected to be on sale from tomorrow and can be purchased from the Mackenzie Community Theatre website.
