Nearly $2000 has made its way from South Canterbury’s now defunct travel club to Age Concern South Canterbury’s travel funds.

After operating for more than 60 years, the club had closed down earlier this year, and members had decided the $1869 of accumulated funds should be donated to Age Concern.

Sue Thin and Ann White visited Age Concern’s Friday Club recently to officially hand over the funds.

Age Concern South Canterbury manager Chris Thomas said he hoped to use the funds in a similar theme to that of the club.

He said they may potentially put them towards subsidising some travel for members.

While Age Concern had regular outings, the funds could allow for some more special trips.

"The plan is next year we will do a couple of ‘journeys’ — day trips, but long day trips."

Options on the table included a visit to the Kaiapoi paddle boat, Dunedin’s Taieri train or Ferrymead in Christchurch.

"We will canvas what people want to do, and we want to stretch the money as far as we can."
