Woman crashed car while avoiding wallaby on road

A woman was trapped in her car after she crashed when she swerved to avoid a wallaby near Waimate this morning.

The crash occurred near the Waimate Gorge on State Highway 82 at 6.50am.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said two appliances from the Waimate Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the crash and firefighters cut the woman free.

Sergeant Kevin Reynolds, of Waimate, said the woman was taken to hospital, but he did not believe her injuries were serious.

"It looks like a young lady travelling towards Kurow has swerved to avoid a wallaby on the road and has unfortunately rolled the vehicle," Sgt Reynolds said.

The road was closed for one hour as emergency services worked at the scene.
