Armed police swarmed a house in a small South Otago town yesterday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman confirmed shortly before 3pm officers, including members of the armed offenders squad and police dogs, were at a home in Kaitangata.

She described the raid as the execution of a "pre-planned" search warrant.

A person was at the property but there were no reports they had a firearm, the spokeswoman said.

About the same time in Dunedin, seven police cars with flashing lights sped out from the Dunedin Central Police Station, but it is unknown if the operations are linked.

Police would not be drawn on the nature of the raids yesterday as the matter was "ongoing".
