The 110m bridge that connects Owaka to Jacks Bay is safe despite its apparent deterioration, Clutha District Council's district assets manager Jules Witt says.
The Hina Hina Bridge across the Catlins River estuary had caused some concern for locals, who had emailed the council recently.
''There is some rusting and concrete breaking off, but it's not to the point that our engineer thinks it's going to catastrophically fail,'' he said.
Commercial vehicles would remain prohibited on the bridge and ''most family vehicles'' would be safe for the bridge, Mr Witt said.
A 5-tonne gross weight limit and a 10kmh speed limit had been in place for the past five years.
Narrowing the bridge to restrict access would be an option for the council.
Funding for bridge renewals and all the council's roading would be addressed during the ongoing Long Term Plan process, he said.
