High-speed internet is coming to Balclutha.

A new subdivision in north Balclutha will be the first subdivision to get the service.

As part of the requirement to provide water, power and telecommunication services as the developer of the subdivision, the Clutha District Council has contracted telecommunications company Greenfields to install fibre cable into the 60-lot subdivision at North Balclutha.

The majority of Balclutha uses ADSL internet.

Council chief executive Steve Hill said an added benefit was high-speed Wi-Fi would also be available to households and businesses outside of the subdivision.

Those inside the subdivision will have the fibre in addition to services on offer from internet providers.

The council would investigate if the recent ducting of the main street could be utilised to provide fibre directly to businesses along the main street.

Clutha District Mayor Bryan Cadogan said high-speed internet was needed to ''future-proof'' the area.

The council will also deliberate today on suggested names for streets and reserves in the new north Balclutha development, as well as suggested names for the subdivision itself. A total of 123 names were submitted.
