Bantam fan wins prizes

Peter Mathieson is a bantam fan.

The Milton man said yesterday he entered the Milton Poultry Club's annual show every year.

This year he entered eight birds - all bantams.

"Bantams are easier to keep in town as they're smaller." Mr Mathieson won three prizes with his white wyandotte cockerel, including best fancy bantam. Several of his other bantams also won.

Mr Mathieson has been a member of the Milton Poultry Club for more than 50 years and was awarded life membership last year.

The Milton show has its final day today, open from 10am to 4pm.

Fancy bantam judge Gary Cardno said birds were judged on several aspects including cleanliness, condition, leg structure and feather quality.

The show attracted 383 entries this year across five main sections; poultry and bantams, fancy bantams, game, pigeons, and caged birds, with entries coming from Timaru to Invercargill.
