Residents of Holmdene rest-home will present a petition to Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan today asking for cracked and potholed footpaths in Balclutha streets to be fixed.

Resident Natalie Hill (84) said many complaints had been made about the quality of the streets and footpaths surrounding Holmdene in Elizabeth St and also the paths leading to Naish Park in Charlotte St.

She said there were cracks and holes in footpaths used by residents for walks or wheelchair outings.

''It's very uncomfortable and shakes up the joints.''

The trip to Naish Park ''should be lovely'' but the condition of the footpaths meant residents ''felt every bump'' when they went over cracks or holes.

A lot of the residents who used the footpaths were at risk of tripping over.

''[We] should be able to go anywhere but we are not able to.''

A petition was circulated around the aged-care facility to both residents and visitors and also distributed to stores and businesses in the town.

More than 120 people signed the petition, which will be presented to Mr Cadogan today.

The mayor agreed with what the residents were trying to do, admitting some footpaths could not be walked down easily.

''For them [the aged-care residents], that's their life and their external stimulus.''

Mr Cadogan said the Clutha District Council would accept the petition, which had ''come at the right time''.

Because of the timing, the council would be able to include it in the discussions for the council's annual plan.

''We'll fit it in the annual plan, have a discussion about it and see what comes out the other end.

The council had talked about improving the footpaths in the past but it was not a high priority with the people spoken to at the time.
