Centre cost split evenly

The cost of a sizeable ratepayer-funded grant towards the planned Clutha Recreation Centre will be shared evenly between Balclutha ratepayers and the rest of the district.

The Clutha District Council yesterday debated who should pay for the grant.

The council had already agreed to pay up to $1.2 million towards the facility, but the debate yesterday focused on who should pay how much.

A motion was tabled on Thursday calling for Balclutha ward ratepayers to pay half the money, with the balance coming from the rest of the district.

But an amendment, suggesting Balclutha pay 37% and the rest of the district 63%, was introduced yesterday.

Councillors were divided on the answer.

Those preferring the even split said Balclutha stood to gain more than other towns because the facility would be built there.

Those wanting the 37%-63% split said Balclutha ratepayers would still pay more than the rest of the district through the uniform annual general charge.

The amendment lost 9-5. Councillors then voted 13-2 to introduce a 50-50 split.
