Contest to benefit rescue services

Hunters and fishermen will compete for the best catches in Clydevale next month during the third annual Valley Roar hunting and fishing competition.

Organiser Karen Mills, owner of the Greenfield Tavern, said the event was ''a bit of fun'' and a good opportunity to raise money for community and service groups.

Last year's competition raised $6000 for three South Otago groups - Clutha Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade ($3000), Catlins Search and Rescue ($1500) and Clutha Search and Rescue ($1500). Proceeds this year will go to Balclutha St John and the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust.

Sections include best antlers and tusks, heaviest red stag, heaviest fallow buck, heaviest pig, and average or heaviest bag of all three, plus a ''take the kids hunting'' section.

The competition runs from April 11 to 13, with weigh-in on Sunday, April 13.

This year, a ''best dressed pest'' competition had been introduced, for something ''a bit different'', Ms Mills said.

''We're very interested to see what people come up with.''

Entries close on April 9.
