An information panel commemorating the life of West Otago GP Dr Peter Snow will be unveiled next month.

The Snow family and Tapanui-West Otago (TWO) Promotions have worked on the panel for the last year.

The panel acknowledges the role Dr Snow played in the community.

He died in February 2006, aged 71.

The panel will be unveiled at the Seasons' courtyard in Tapanui's central business area on Saturday, August 8, at 11.30am.

Dr Snow served as Tapanui's sole doctor for 37 years and was a leading medical researcher who helped identify chronic fatigue syndrome, which later became known as "Tapanui flu".

He was at the forefront of efforts to keep open the former Tapanui Hospital.

The secretary of TWO Promotions, Marg Read, said the panel would mark Dr Snow's contribution to the community.

It would also recognise his passionate interest in geology.

Dr Snow and others believed moonrock from a meteor collision with the moon in 1766 sent showers of moonrock and other material across the West Otago area.

A piece of moonrock will sit next to the panel, Mrs Read said.

Dr Snow's three surviving sons are expected to attend the ceremony.
