Two men escaped injury when a tractor and a logging truck and trailer unit collided 14km south of Balclutha yesterday.

Constable Deidre Mills, of Balclutha, said the tractor and truck and trailer unit were southbound on State Highway 1 when they collided at Kaihiku shortly before noon.

It appeared the tractor, towing a bale wrapper, was turning right into a farm driveway while the truck was attempting to pass it.

The 23-year-old Irishman driving the tractor and the 34-year-old Winton man driving the truck were uninjured but taken to Clutha Health First for a check-up.

The road was reduced to one lane for more than six hours while emergency services and contractors, aided by machinery from Dunedin and Owaka, cleared the scene.
