Balclutha photographer has unveiled her first gallery exhibition, in Owaka.

The exhibition called ''Sheep, shearing, and scenery'' features photographs by Joanne McLeary, depicting farm life and landscapes of South Otago.

''This is my take on portraying that power, vibrancy and breath-taking quality of New Zealand life - sheep, shearers, and scenery.''

Most of the photographs were taken in the past few years, although a few were a little older, she said.

The shearing photographs mainly feature her husband Alan, who was pleasantly surprised with how they turned out.

''I first started taking photos to show my family back home [Canada] what it was like.''

Since then, her photography hobby had developed into a successful business, including teaching others how to ''preserve their own stories''.

Mrs McLeary said this was her first solo exhibition in a gallery, and she was ''honoured'' to be invited to show her work at the Owaka Museum.

Her photographs have been given a ''painting effect'', but she would not reveal the process. Before the exhibition officially opened on Friday, Mrs McLeary had already sold five photographs.

Museum director Kaaren Mitcalfe said she wanted to show something that would interest both locals and tourists.

The museum had a history of supporting emerging and local artists, she said.

The exhibition runs until May 18.
