Telford Farm, near Balclutha, is opening its gates next month to allow the public to experience what happens on a working farm, and a free bus service from Dunedin and Mosgiel will make it easy for people to get there.
The plan to open the farm gates on Sunday, March 13, was part of Federated Farmers' annual Farm Day, in which 11 farms nationwide will be be open to the public so families can visit a working farm, and discover what farmers actually do.
Otago Federated Farmers' president Mike Lord said tours of the 880ha Telford Farm will be held during the day from 10am to 3pm, showing visitors the different activities on the sheep, beef, deer, forestry and dairy units.
Shearing and dog trial demonstrations are planned, a zoo paddock will allow children to get up close to animals and there will be a free barbecue.
Produce stalls will allow visitors to sample farm-fresh food.
Mr Lord said people intending to take advantage of the free bus service should register with the federation's Otago office by March 1.
