Interest in annual plan drops

Ratepayer interest in this year's Clutha District Council draft annual plan appears less than in previous years with just 44 submissions received for the 2008-09 document.

Submissions closed last Friday and of the 44 received, just 15 submitters have indicated they want to speak to their proposals or suggestions on what the council should spend its rates on in the coming financial year.

Council chief executive Charles Hakkaart said commonly raised submission topics included roading upgrades, recycling, fluoridation and funding requests for new or ongoing community projects and initiatives.

The full council will hear all submissions on May 22.

Staff will then prepare reports on each submission and they will again be considered and debated at a meeting on June 5, before the council adopts the final annual plan and strikes the rates on June 19.

It is proposing a general rates rise of 5.13% for the next financial year.
