Two new sponsorship projects have been launched to help fund the $2.85 million West Otago Health Centre in Tapanui, which is under construction.

West Otago Health Trust chairman Allister Body said the project was on track for completion in July.

So far between 8km and 10km of cables had been installed, and there were 20,000 bricks and 700 sheets of gib board on site, he said.

''The bricking is half-done and the roof is mostly done. We're really happy with the progress.''

Dunedin businesses Cook Brothers Construction and Oakley Gray Architects won the $2.4 million contract to build the community-owned health centre. The project budget has since been capped at $2.85 million due to alterations. The trust had enough money to meet the stage one construction costs, Mr Body said.

Stage two of the project, a helipad costing an estimated $10,000, would be paid for by the Mercer Trust, with labour provided by the Tapanui Volunteer Fire Brigade, but about $200,000 was still needed for the third stage, equipment and landscaping.

To help raise the remaining money, two new sponsorship projects have been launched - car park and lighting bollard sponsorship.

Support for the room-sponsorship scheme had been ''fantastic'' but families and smaller businesses had said although they were interested in sponsorship they could not afford to sponsor a room. Eighteen car parks were available, with a sign or logo mounted on a beam at each sponsored park.

Macrocarpa lighting bollards along a pathway will also be available for sponsorship.
