New Zealand author Ken Catran, a founding writer of Shortland Street, the television soap, will visit South Otago this month to talk books.

Catran has written more than 30 novels for young adults and has written for television, including the 1970s New Zealand serial Close To Home.

He will speak at an evening to be held at the Balclutha Library on May 26 from 7pm.

Last year, Catran won this country's most prestigious children's writing awards, the Margaret Mahy Medal, recognising his contribution to New Zealand children's literature.

Many of his books are science fiction but his interests also include historical fiction, mystery and comic relief.

Clutha District Council library-service centre manager Vicki Darling said Catran would talk about writing, the process of writing a book, research and plot structure and keeping the reader interested.

"This will be of great interest to readers and writers of all ages. It will be a great opportunity to gain an insight into the mind of one of New Zealand's finest authors," Ms Darling said.
