For Balclutha’s Brian and Pauline Dodds, lending a hand was simply what good neighbours did.
"Pauline and Brian and their family have stood by me over the years," octogenarian next-door nominator Heidi Valli said.
"No matter how busy they are, somehow they always have time to come to the rescue."
From garden work and carpentry repairs to meals, transport and recent storm cleanup, the Dodds have been a steady source of care and companionship.
Mr Dodds said helping out was a natural extension of the friendship the neighbours had built over five decades.
"Heidi was very independent, very active and now not so much, but she’s keen to stay at home and we’re supporting her in that wish," he said.
"We moved here in 1974 and the Vallis were great neighbours to us as newcomers — so you naturally do these things."
