Mail thwarts talks on plan

A mail delivery issue hindered efforts to discuss a plan for the long-term management of Tapanui's Whisky Gully reserve yesterday.

The West Otago Community Board was due to discuss and recommend the amended Whisky Gully Domain reserve management plan be adopted by the Clutha District Council, but copies posted out to members last week failed to arrive in time for the meeting yesterday morning.

The matter was raised by the Tapanui West Otago (Two) Promotions which wrote to the community board, requesting the council develop a long-term plan for Whisky Gully.

The domain, on Whisky Gully Rd, is often used for recreational activities. The domain backs on to Department of Conservation land which includes the Whisky Gully walk. Part of the domain is leased out.

Board chairwoman Barbara Hanna suggested the agenda item be put off until the next meeting in six weeks, to allow members to look at the plan before signing it off.

Council district assets manager Jules Witt said that since the plan had not arrived in time for the meeting, residents who made submissions to the plan would also need to be told it had been pushed back.

The council was due to adopt the plan on February 27.

The plan also addresses confusion around the spelling of Whisky Gully, as council and the New Zealand Geographic Board spells it ''Whiskey Gully''.

The community board will discuss the plan and any required amendments at its next meeting on March 12 and the Clutha District Council will approve the final plan on April 10.
