Mayor Bryan Cadogan, Clutha District Council staff and councillors stopped by Fidelis Cafe in Milton to speak to locals about the proposals in the council's community plan.
The plan, titled ''Our Place'', asked residents to submit feedback on proposals for Milton's footpaths, main street, parks and reserves, key facilities such as the public toilets and the swimming pool.
About 35 people attended the meeting at the cafe, much to the delight of Mr Cadogan.
''I was thrilled with the number that was there . . . and, by and large, it was new faces.''
He said he was rapt with the responses.
''Milton is getting the chance to stake their case.
He said there were a lot of positive trends emerging and ''positive initiatives being expressed''.
The feedback would help determine the priorities for each community.
''It would give us the breadth and the depth to work out what Milton wants.''
The council had a responsibility to ask the questions and give the town a chance to express itself.
The consultation period ends this Friday, however the council could approve some late submissions ''within reason'', Mr Cadogan said.
The next step was to collate the information and present it to the council for consideration.
What the council decided to do with the information could fit into its long-term and annual plans.
Councillors Gaynor Finch and Bruce Vollweiler attended the public meeting as well as council chief executive Steve Hill and other council staff.
Waihola would be next on the list for the ''Our Place'' community process, once the Milton consultation was over.
