Motorbike rally to open road

The roar of hundreds of motorcycles, converging in South Otago for a rally, will provide a backdrop to the official opening of a newly sealed tourist road this coming weekend.

The Clutha District Council will open the Karoro Creek and Ahuriri Flat roads this Saturday, September 19.

The two roads link the coastal settlement of Kaka Point with Owaka.

The roads form part of the Kaka Point loop of the Southern Scenic Route, connecting the township to the Owaka Highway and the Catlins.

An opening ceremony will be staged at the Willsher Bay Domain from 1pm on Saturday.

Karoro Creek Rd will be closed from 12.45pm to 1.10pm for the ceremony.

Mayor Juno Hayes said a mass ride of motorcyclists attending the nearby Penguin Rally on the same day will make for an impressive spectacle.

The $1.65 million sealing project was funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency, which contributed about $1.16 million, while the rest was from a council loan.
