With voices like the summer rain, musical duo Just Us from Otago University won several top awards at a talent quest in Balclutha at the weekend.

Teisha Seymour, originally of Milton, and Karina Murray-Dodd, originally of Wellington, performed Jolene, by Dolly Parton, at the Clutha Country Music Club Talent show on Saturday.

The pair met in Dunedin, where they both study contemporary music.

They were surprised to win the top award in the senior section.

''We were excited and stoked,'' Ms Seymour said.

They also won the duo section and were successful in their individual artist categories.

The pair drew inspiration from several contemporary artists, as they look at several genres as part of their studies.

''I guess we pull it from here and there,'' Ms Seymour said.

Ms Murray-Dodd plans to move to Singapore, where her family is based, once she graduates this year. Ms Seymour still has a year to go and hopes to follow her to Singapore, where the pair will regroup as a musical act.

Balclutha Country Music Club publicity officer Lynn Smart said there were 150 entries for the show, which was held over two days at Rosebank Lodge. The youngest performer was 5 and the oldest was in their 60s.

The seniors performed on Saturday and the juniors on Sunday.

Other top winners in the show included Kris Collins, Grace Michelle and Tahla Ward, who won the audience's choice award in the senior, intermediate and junior sections respectively.

The other overall winners were musical duo Abella in the junior section and musical group MAC in the intermediate section.
