Construction of a dog exercise area at the Clutha District Council's pound has begun.

Council regulatory services manager David Campbell said work was under way on an exercise area for dogs at the facility.

It was expected to cost about $20,000.

Mr Campbell said the aim was to provide a covered area for exercising the dogs.

At present, the pound had an open grassed area, which would still be used.

''This [new exercise] facility will provide alternative dog exercise options in bad weather and for dogs that are more difficult to handle.''

The area was scheduled to be completed before winter, he said. It would not be available for public use.

Ground maintenance at the pound had also been completed, which included clearing drains and filling in old offal holes that had subsided.

Other work to be completed at the council's facilities included the repair of painted surfaces at the Milton Pool.

An agenda item for this week's standing committee meetings said an excess of ''paint flakes'' were found in the pool cleaner in the main Milton pool.

The original contractor that painted the pool had agreed to repair the flaking surfaces at no cost to the council.

It was originally painted in early 2016.

A visual inspection determined the majority of the flaking paint was coming off the silicone expansion joints and was not detrimental to the pool's integrity.

The agenda said flaking could possibly also be coming from areas not associated with the joints.

Repairs to areas of concern were expected to be addressed in April.
