State Highway 1 has reopened after a fatal crash south of Milton this afternoon.

Police confirmed one person died when a car and a truck collided near Lakeside Rd shortly after 2pm.

Senior Sergeant Stan Leishman, of Balclutha, said the single occupant of a northbound maroon Subaru was killed in the crash with the truck, which was heading south.

The truck driver was not injured in the crash, but was left shaken.

A reporter at the scene said the crash involved a septic tank servicing truck.

The car, which was covered in a sheet, was flattened against the front of the truck and squashed in half.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand and St John were earlier at the scene.

The road was blocked in both directions and traffic was backed up for a time, but the NZ Transport Agency advised around 7.20pm the road had reopened.
