Some of South Otago's hidden historic machines could soon get a chance to shine, through local vintage machinery club proposals for a "heritage park".

South Otago Vintage Machinery Club secretary Cameron Clark said there were many vintage machines across the district and the club had been considering how to display them.

"We've been talking about doing this for about five to seven years but the ball has only been rolling for about 12 months."

The park, in the southwest corner of the Milton A and P showgrounds, would be open to other "like-minded" clubs.

The Clark family, of Moneymore, south of Milton, owns 32 vintage tractors from the late 1930s to the 1970s and five vintage cars. Others in the area had collections of a similar size.

"The idea is to rotate the displays from collectors to give everyone a chance to see some of the historic machinery in the area," he said.

The group is keen to hold "crank-up days" like the Edendale Vintage Machinery Club's annual two-day event, considered to be one of the biggest country fairs in New Zealand.

Location was a "huge thing", Mr Clark said. The park location would be an enhancement for the Tokomairiro A and P Show.

The club also hoped to lease the ground around the proposed building site to hold machine demonstrations and generate some income for the park.

"If we can plant some oats then we can harvest them, thresh them, and plough the ground to show how the machines worked."

The group had talked to other museums in the area about the project, and hoped tractors and other old machinery from the wider South Otago area would take part in the displays.

The report outlining the proposal will be put forward to the Clutha District Council district assets committee meeting today.

The committee will vote on whether to receive the report and whether the committee should recommend that the council's reserve management plan be reviewed and updated.
