Police admit mistake: Owaka diver not alone

Police have acknowledged releasing incorrect information over the death of an Owaka man who died while diving in the Marlborough Sounds.

Fairfax reported that police initially reported 25-year-old free diver Baden Pierce McNab was diving alone when he went missing near Titi Island on Tuesday.

One of the divers with McNab told Fairfax he and Mr McNab were part of a group of three divers who were within 30m of each other in the water.

Senior Sergeant Julian Lewis, of Blenheim, confirmed McNab was not alone and said police would investigate how incorrect information had been released.

Police recovered a body yesterday.

While a formal identification process had yet to be completed, it was believed to be McNab.

McNab went to Otago Boys' High School.
