About 80 golfers took to Tokomairiro Golf Club course on November 1 for the Tiny Agnew Memorial Tournament, held in memory of the well-known and much-loved Milton butcher.

Organiser Wendy Agnew said the one-off event was an opportunity for family, friends and the wider community to get together and remember her late husband, who died in December last year.

"He was a popular person and did so much for the community," she said.

"He was very good at donating things and he loved his golf."

The tournament was played for prizes over a full 18 holes in "glorious" conditions.

"Thank you to the players for making this an incredible day and everyone who helped in any way," Mrs Agnew said.

She also expressed her gratitude to the long list of event sponsors, including local businesses.

On the turf, the day produced some strong competition, with Jack Murray taking out the men’s title on 44 points, ahead of M. Scott (43) and W. Howell (42).

Mrs Agnew herself won the women’s section with 39 points, followed by D. Matsopoulas (38) and S. Bearman (37).

Special prizes included M. Clark for the longest putt on holes 7/16, D. McMillan for men’s closest pin (second shot 9/18) and J. Good for women’s closest pin (second shot 3/12).

While the memorial event will not become an annual tournament, Mrs Agnew said the club plans to keep the spirit of Tiny’s day alive as part of its regular golfing calendar.
