The 8-year-old Rosebank Primary School pupil has won a national young writers' competition.

The Christchurch-based School 4 Young Writers' "That Summer'' competition is for children aged 8 and under. They were invited to submit fictional stories of a summer adventure or experience.

Sophie's effort was about two children who decide to make a tree-hut together.

It took a few days to decide on the basic idea behind the story and several weeks to piece it all together.

She was happy with the end result, but not confident of doing well in the competition. A letter which arrived late last week changed all that. The school confirmed she had won her age category.

"The judge thought all the 8 and under [entries] were remarkable so you were the most remarkable of them all. Well done,'' the letter read.

Sophie, who could barely contain her excitement yesterday, is always writing. She writes stories in the morning, in the afternoon and at night before bed.

"I just love writing. Can you tell?''

Her special writing desk contains dozens of stories and Sophie said she had plenty of ideas for more.

Her award-winning story will be published in the writing school's magazine. She also wins a $50 book voucher and a term's tuition through correspondence.
