Fifteen boys at Warepa School shaved their heads on Friday, November 14 to show support and raise funds for their friend 13-year-old Max Lindsay, who is in hospital in Christchurch.

A popular classmate known for his humour, love of sport and the outdoors, Max was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer.

Supported by his mother in Christchurch, he is squared up for several rounds of tough treatment including chemotherapy as well as surgery.

Dubbed Whacky Hair Day, the lunchtime event was a way for the children to contribute in real terms as well as show Max they wanted the best for him. The event had a festive atmosphere as mums and teachers lined up with clippers to send the sponsored boys’ hair flying.

Among parents and pupils gathered to cheer the boys on was Max’s father, Morgan Lindsay, who said Max been in Christchurch with his mother since October 6.

"All going well, we hope they’ll be coming home for a spell soon," he said.
