After 35 years at South Otago High School, teacher Alan Martin is retiring.
Mr Martin was farewelled at the school's last assembly of the term yesterday, ending his time at the school to a loud burst of applause from pupils, teachers and parents.
He came to the school in 1976, as a science and biology teacher, became head of science in the 1980s, and later a specialist classroom teacher, helping other teachers improve their skills.
Principal Nick Simpson said Mr Martin was a "master teacher" and he would be sorry to see him go.
"Alan's a top teacher, with a huge amount of experience and I've really appreciated his gentle wisdom," Mr Simpson said.
Deputy principal John Douglas has worked with Mr Martin for 33 years.
"He's a superb classroom teacher, and I will be sad to see him go," he said.
Pupil Corbin Bungard said Mr Martin was a "really good bloke" and would be missed by all.
Mr Martin was born in Tapanui in 1949 but moved to Feilding and taught there before moving to Balclutha in 1976.
He coached the school's first XV rugby team from his arrival in 1976 until 2002.
An avid fisherman, he likes to fish the Waipahi, Pomahaka and Clutha Rivers, where there is "some of the best fishing in New Zealand."
Mr Martin plans to divide his time between Balclutha and Dunedin, and to visit the art gallery and Hocken Library.
