Dig out those cans and prepare to help your neighbours as the Christmas season approaches; Toot 4 Tucker is back next Thursday!

Kind-hearted Clutha residents should stock up and stand by for the 2025 Clutha Food Hub Toot 4 Tucker.

From 6.30pm, volunteers heralded by the signature sirens and flashing lights of their emergency service escorts will begin sweeping street by street through the district to pick up non-perishable food gifts from the community.

This year some extra destinations have been added by community demand — Balclutha, Stirling, Kaitangata, Kaka Point, Owaka and Clinton will all be covered.

Every single gift of non-perishable food items such as cans and packets is greatly appreciated by the Clutha Food Hub and the grateful local clients they look out for.

Following the success of the midwinter Every Can Counts booster drive, the Food Hub team is hopeful communities can dig into their cupboards to help replenish stocks once more.

Clutha Budget Advisory Service & Food Hub manager Lee-Anne Michelle said demand for the hub’s services continued to grow, with Christmas its busiest time of year as financial hardships began to bite into household budgets.

"We’ve seen a near-60% increase in demand for food parcels compared to 2024, as costs of living increase and people struggle to meet everyday bills.

"We’re incredibly appreciative of all the support we get from community donors and we’re looking forward to our big Toot 4 Tucker drive next Thursday."

She said anyone could find themselves in food hardship, often due to circumstances beyond their control.

"Many of our recipients are in paid employment of some sort.

"Often hardships arise due to unexpected bills like medical expenses or vehicle repairs and as we all know, even simply buying groceries is more and more of a challenge for people as inflation hits."

Ms Michelle thanked donors, volunteers and the emergency services for their ongoing support for Toot 4 Tucker.
