In an attempt to reach more of the population it covers, the Otago Southern Region primary health organisation has carried out free health checks at two shearing quarters.
Manager Kaylene Holland said the evening clinics, carried out earlier this year at quarters in Milton and Lawrence, had been "brilliant".
"People were really rapt that we had come to their place."
A team, including a doctor and at least three nurses, had seen 28 men and 23 women.
They carried out general health checks and gave out information about matters such as stopping smoking.
Women could also have free cervical smear tests.
Ms Holland said the PHO attended some A and P shows to offer health advice and was considering other possibilities for workplace checks.
Men were particularly hard to attract to doctors' clinics.
Ms Holland said they often seemed to be " scared of prostate checks", but medical staff would talk to them about any possible prostate problems and arrange blood tests if necessary.
Staff did not collect data about how long it had been since those attending the shearing quarters clinics had visited a doctor, but this could be done in future.
