10 nominees for southern candidacy

Ten people have put their names forward for the National Party's Clutha-Southland candidate's position.

Clutha-Southland electorate chairman Stuart Davie said nominations closed on Monday, with 10 received.

There had always been a lot of interest in the Clutha-Southland electorate and there were ''no surprises'' in the names put forward, Mr Davie said.

The nominees' names would go before the electorate board, before an April 5 pre-selection meeting in Queenstown.

No names would be released until the number of nominees was whittled down to five or fewer.

In November, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Bill English announced he would give up his Clutha-Southland seat at the next election and stand as a National Party list candidate.

Mr English has held the seat since 1990.
