The person, who wished to remain anonymous, said a balaclava-clad man entered the Brown Street Food Centre about 9pm on Saturday and presented a knife.
"He demanded smokes and stole a few packets and then ran west."
While staff were shaken, they were pleased with how police dealt with the crime and were confident they would catch the offender, the person said.
"We called police and they were here really quick, in like five minutes."
Police confirmed a man entered the store, near the intersection of Brown St and McQuarrie St, and threatened staff with what appeared to be a piece of wood and a knife.
He was described as about 185cm tall and wearing a black hoodie and black pants.
