An Invercargill pupil has been taken to hospital with moderate injuries after an alleged assault at a Southland high school this afternoon.
Police were called to the school just before 2pm over the incident involving two pupils, a police spokeswoman said.
One of the pupils was taken to Southland Hospital.
Police spoke to the other pupil involved, and media were reporting on Tuesday evening that an arrest had been made in connection with the incident.
The school's rector confirmed a pupil had received medical attention following the incident.
The school had launched an investigation and notified the Ministry of Education.
Education Ministry deputy secretary sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said the ministry had spoken with the rector and offered its support to the school.
"All students deserve to feel safe at school and our thoughts are with the student injured and their family."
The ministry would not be investigating because the matter had been appropriately referred to police, she said.
