State Highway 94 is closed from East Gate (Hollyford) to The Chasm today and has been for much of the week.
Waka Kotahi / NZ Transport Agency said the avalanche hazard risk had been moderate, but was now low.
Helicopters were used to help shift the snow while conditions were good this morning.
A number of avalanches were created and work to clear the road was under way.
"Subject to this being successful, we plan to have safe access for reopening or convoys in and out of Milford Sound later this afternoon," Waka Kotahi said.
Snow clearing would continue over the next few days.
