Bottle throw proves costly

An Invercargill man found himself out of pocket by $250 after a judge disagreed with him over "a Southland thing to do".

Tyler Bremer (18) was found guilty in the Invercargill District Court of a charge of wilfully breaking glass in a public place.

The court heard that Bremer was seen last December throwing a bottle over the roof of the car in which he was a passenger, near Luggate on State Highway 6.

Bremer was part of a group that was consuming alcohol as they made a trip called "Around the Mountain".

Seen by another motorist, who reported the incident, Bremer admitted his actions to police who caught up with him and his friends in Queenstown. Police asked him for an explanation.

"It was a Southland thing to do."

On hearing this in court yesterday, Judge Bernadette Farnan said: "Clearly, it is not a Southland thing to do, otherwise he would not be here [in court]."

Bremer was ordered to pay the $250 to a charity and bring the receipt back to court.
