Buzz as new mall opens in Invercargill

Invercargill's new mall welcomed its first customers this morning.

The first stage of Invercargill Central was formally opened today by Invercargill Mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt and blessed by Ngai Tahu Kaumatua Michael Skerrett.

It comprises 11,570m2 with 10 stores - Farmers, Glassons, Pascoes the Jewellers, 2degrees, Merchant 1948, Michael Hill, Pagani, Mister Minit, Mobile King and Amazon - plus covered car parking, offering space for more than 300 vehicles.

Sir Tim said he was excited, as the new development was looking good.

"I am overwhelmed by how people feel about it and how shopping became such a big part of our culture and we are celebrating that with a shopping mall.

"It is finally here."

Invercargill Central manager Kelvin Mooney said it was a mix of emotions as he was nervous and excited to be able to open the doors for the customers.

"We had a lot of people through, but it is the public that we really want here. We want the community to enjoy it."

The buzz was all around, with retailers working frantically to make everything ready to welcome their customers. About tow dozen people were lining up at the door at Esk St to be part of the launch.
