Cyclist dies after collision

A 61-year-old man died in Invercargill yesterday after a collision involving a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Although Invercargill police have not named the cyclist, the Otago Daily Times has been informed he was Noel Eade, well known in Southland cycling.

Mr Eade was cycling north in Lindisfarne St when he was involved in a collision with a Daihatsu four-wheel drive travelling east in Tay St at 5pm.

Senior Sergeant Richard McPhail, of Invercargill, said the vehicle was driven by a 22-year-old woman, who was shaken but uninjured.

Mr Eade was taken by ambulance to Southland Hospital but died a short time later.

The road was closed for one and a-half hours while the serious crash unit conducted a scene examination, Snr Sgt McPhail said.

Mr Eade had only recently recovered from another serious roadside accident in September.

He had been in a field of 38 cyclists competing in a 50km race from Lorneville to Brydone when he and four others were involved in a collision with a Winton Stock and Feed Transport truck carrying grain at the intersection of Grove Bush Rd and Hedgehope Rd.

Last night, Cycling Southland manager Bruce Ross said Mr Eade was a "proper cycling man" who was recently fifth in the masters six-road race at the New Zealand club national road championships in Wanganui.

He had also worked as a Tour of Southland official, Mr Ross said.
