The last of the fire crews called to a big gorse fire in Tiwail, near Invercargill, have left the scene this morning.

Four fire appliances were sent at 6.39pm yesterday, followed by two tankers, following reports of a fire in Tiwai Rd.

Crews had come from Tiwai, Kingswell and Invercargill to extinguish the blaze, which had burnt about 2000sq m of vegetation by 8pm.

The fire did not threaten any buildings and was contained shortly before 9pm.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said the remaining crew, from Hedgehope, left the scene about 9am today.

"Everyone has come away so they were obviously happy with everything."
