Man charged after Invercargill standoff

A man has been charged after an incident which required police to cordon off eight blocks of Invercargill's CBD area last night.

Officers were called to a property in Dee St at 7.15pm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stu Harvey told the ODT the incident involved a man and a woman.

"The female reportedly involved in the family harm incident walked out of the property around 9.30pm and is safe and uninjured."

Sgt Harvey said Armed Offenders Squad assisted as a precaution and "no shots were fired at any time".

The incident was resolved about 12.30am today and a 27-year-old man was taken into custody.

The man was charged with contravening protection order, speaking threateningly and assaulting a person in family relationship and was due to appear in court.
