Monitoring reports leave smelter company confident

New Zealand Aluminium Smelters is confident in its environmental record after releasing 25 years of monitoring reports.

The smelter yesterday released the reports that detailed environmental monitoring conducted at Tiwai Point.

Last month, it released reports that identified key environmental issues for the smelter ahead of its 2024 closure, as well as a sampling plan which detailed the areas determined where extra testing as part of a closure study should be conducted.

In a press release, it said the reports were provided to Environment Southland annually and contained assessments of the atmospheric conditions, groundwater and the landfill site.

"Based on the review work done and the interaction with regulators to date, NZAS is confident it is currently compliant with all of its consents and environmental obligations."

Chief executive and site general manager Stew Hamilton said the smelter took environmental responsibilities seriously.

He said the data showed how the smelter had significantly reduced the environmental impact of its operations over the past two decades.

"Our monitoring systems give us ample warning of any issue and enable us to alter processes wherever necessary.

"There has never been an instance during our 50 years of operation which could harm the public or local communities."
